Your Virtual Thank You Note

This weekend's tag sale event exceeded our expectations! Probably because we were expecting the worst...no one showing up, being stuck with lots of lamps, and having to eat 75 cupcakes. Other than feeling good about the merchandise Brandy and I have lovingly collected, I was excited to meet so many women that have similar interest and taste. I feel like I made so many new friends and can't wait to start building the "collection" again so we can host" Tag Sale Event Phase 2".

So here is your virtual thank you note...the ya ya mother would be very upset with me if I didn't send this out promptly.

I did hit the flea market on Sunday and found this:

There were a pair of these cement stools that weighed 1 million pounds and would not work in the back of my Altima but I loved them.

and this:

which will lead to a decor change in my guest room.

I'm excited about that because I will need a project to get me out of my building funk. We leave Sunday to bring Emily to college and I can feel the pressure in my chest getting a little heavier every day.

So thanks again for the love and support we felt this past weekend. It was a dream come true.

Tag Sale 101

It's funny, the term "tag sale" is so common to me however I've had several friends ask, "what exactly is a tag sale?".  I didn't stop to think that some of my friends might not be as familiar with that term as I am.  This tag sale will be a mix of vintage treasures acquired during many adventures and newer items from some favorite stores that are just gently used but in very good condition.
Why have a sale you ask?    There are 3 answers to that question:
  • I have a passion for finding objects from the past, repurposing them, giving them new life and mixing them with modern pieces to create fun unexpected spaces.
  • Also, I suffer from OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Decorating.  My house is continually evolving and my family has just come to accept this as a way of life.  Because of this condition, I need a means to move new things in and other things out......hence the need for a sale.
  • Last but not least, the sale is not just a hodgepodge of randomness, it is a calculated grouping of objects that all work together to create what I've come to call Gogo Style.  I guess I feel the need to share this style with my family and friends because I truly believe it infuses fun and happiness into your space.....at least it does for me.
How would I describe Gogo Style? I would say it is a balance between the clean lines of mid-century modern, the bold glamour of Hollywood Regency and a splash of Palm Springs chic.  If this sounds like foreign language to you, still come and check it out.  You may be surprised by what you find.
Here are a few Pinterest pics that I think capture this style:

A barcart is always a must

Transitional Furniture

Now that I am entering this phase of my life that involves no children around, I look around at my "younger"friends homes that have toys and kid equipment and think "Wow, we as parents spend a heck of alot of money and precious storage space on these nuggets!" I mean think of all the amazing things we could have bought ourselves. Like sports cars versus SUV's, coffee tables with sharp corners, white furniture, vacations that didn't include water parks. Oh well, I personally wouldn't trade any of that for my kids so it would be great if there were some items that we could recycle so when you get to be an empty nester like me, you could still get your money's worth.

For instance the trampoline. Can't jump on it now at this age because you would have pee going down your legs, but you could do this:

And take those afternoon siesta's you never got to do when kids were around.

A Lost Art

It is about 6 years ago when I finally kicked the habit of smoking and I can honestly say it was the hardest thing I have ever done...including giving birth. I do miss certain things about it, first cig of the day with a huge mug of coffee, getting on the phone with my best friend and smoking away as we complain about kids, husbands, or mothers, or when the weather is so good you never want to come in and you mix an evening cocktail, grab your pack and unwind.

But the bad outweighs the good, obviously, so I quit. When I go to estate sales or flea markets, I am always attracted to vintage ashtrays and matchbooks and am amazed at the art and creativity that went into these items. Smoking was such a stylish, chic, and social activity in the 1950/1960's so the accessories had to be stylish and chic as well

What happened to the days when you would leave a restaurant and there would be really cool matchbooks in a bowl that you could take on the way out?

I was at an estate sale not to long ago and I could kick my own butt for not buying this person's vintage matchbook collection. There are so many ways to display these little boxes of heat.

But the best idea I have come across in a while is from the blog Capital B. This chick gives instructions on how to make your own "matchbook" notepad using paint chips that we all collect. It's basically a free idea and looks amazing.

I think this is actually a crafty project I am capable of so when I finally get dressed today I'm going to Home Depot and grab my favorite colors!

Decorating The Dorm Room

Emily has finally decided on bedding for her dorm room so now the fun part begins...accessories!.This is the part I love whether it is a dorm room or a dining room. A dream job would be to style a photo shoot of anything. I really don't care...just let me style something! Anywhoo...here is the chosen comforter:

She loves red so I'm thinking this desk lamp:

Maybe a cute rug. I like this one because it has a homemade feel to it:

This one has clean lines and is more Emily's style:
This one would really add some fun:
Of course there is a laundry list of things needed but at least we have a vision. Speaking of vision, this article was written a few years ago but every time I see this pic I am in awe of this kid. His name is Maximilian Sinsteden (best name ever) and his dorm room is magazine worthy and was actually featured in the New York Magazine.

This kid painted his walls Ralph Lauren's Tapestry Green for goodness sake, got rid of the dorm issued furniture and brought in vintage thrift store finds. We will definitely be adding a vintage mirror and art work to this space...I am paying for this room so she has to play by my rules :)

It's Hot Here And So Is Craigslist

Apparently the world is either coming to an end or I have died and gone straight to hell because the heat is unbelievable! The wicked witch of the west explains perfectly how I feel:

I wish someone would throw a bucket of water on me. Anyway, being stuck inside has lead me to online shopping and Craigslist Nashville is on fire right now if you are shopping for some mid century pieces:

So fix a ice cold martini, channel Mad Men, and try not to burst into flames.
